Everyone completes five 3-3-3’s, five 3-6-3’s, and 5 Cycles. If they don’t know the Cycle, they can complete five 1-10-1’s instead of the Cycle.
Repeat for 5 minutes.
Training (55 minutes)
Cycle (15 minutes)
Teach players the Cycle.
If players already know the Cycle, then they should practice the Cycle for 5 minutes. After they are warmed up, they can race players at their table for best 2 out of 3.
Doubles (10 Minutes)
Match players up with similarly skilled partners.
If players have just learned the Cycle, have them learn and practice doubles using the 3-6-3.
Teach all the rules for doubles and have players practice.
Make a “round robin” chart to have them practice with different teammates.
You can also make a “left hand chart” and a “right hand chart” that shows which hand each person is using.
Each set of partners does two practices. Then they time their 3 attempts and post the times on the proper chart.
Switch partners after 3 attempts.
Players who know the Cycle well can be paired up with those who don’t. These team members coach their teammates by being the lead hand and reminding their team members what to do to complete doubles using the Cycle.
Dual Meet Training (30 minutes)
Gather your team and go through the motions of a dual meet without any stacking so they learn the structure.
Choose 8-12 kids to be your teams “competing” in the dual meet.
Have them line up and make one of them the “home” team and one of them the “visiting” team.
Do a coin toss and have the visiting team call heads or tails.
Have the team that wins choose their side of the table. Talk about pros and cons of each side of the table.
Set up for the Individual 3-6-3 HTH.
Send up the first 2 players. Talk about how each event is best two out of 3 races to complete a round and that most races are won after 2 or more rounds. Say Ready, Set, Go. Have them start and stop the timer. Winner of the pretend race is the one with the time closest to 0.000.
Send up the next 2 players. Repeat for round 2.
Send up the next 2 players. Repeat for round 3.
Complete the score sheet and show it to the team.
Move on to Event 2, explain Event 2 and go through the motions of that event.
Repeat the same process for Event 3: Doubles
Repeat the same process for Event 4: Timed 3-6-3 Relay Raise the Bar.
Repeat the same process for Event 5: HTH Relay.
Explain that next week, everyone will practice an actual dual meet.
