On the ‘go’ signal, stackers upstack and downstack the determined pattern. Once all the stackers at a table complete the pattern, they move around the table to their right (counter clockwise) and begin stacking the next set of Speed Stacks. Stackers continue to stack and change positions around the table until you give the ‘stop’ signal.
To work on ambidexterity and coordination, have them switch directions every minute.
When moving to the right, they stack using their right hand as the lead hand.
When moving to the left, they stack using their left hand as the lead hand.
Training (20 minutes)
Teach the 6-6 (10 min)
Explain that the 6-6 and 1-10-1 are part of the Cycle.
Have everyone practice the 6-6. Make sure they are downstacking using the method where they partially downstack of the first 6 and then use the cups in each hand to downstack the second 6.
If students have timers, have them time their upstack and downstack of the 6-6 for practice and speed work.
1-10-1 (10 min)
Teach players how to upstack and downstack the 1-10-1.
Stackers who already know how to upstack the 1-10-1 should do the following training drill.
Timing upstacks and downstacks
Stackers put their cups in a column.
They start the timer and upstack their 1-10-1 and then stop the timer.
Note the time.
Put the cups back in a column and repeat the drill for 5 minutes trying for consistent and/or faster time.
Now repeat the same drill for downstacks.
Set up the cups in an upstacked 1-10-1.
Start the timer and downstack the 1-10-1 as fast as you can.
Repeat this exercise for 5 minutes.
Be prepared to tell your coach what skills you think need improvement to have faster upstacks and downstacks on the 1-10-1.
Training Games (20 minutes)
Large Club (16 or more students)
Play Switchback.
Play first using 6 stacks and then play using 10 stacks.
Small Club (15 students or less)
Play Stackers and Blasters
Play first using 6 stacks and then play using 10 stacks.
Independent Practice (10 minutes)
Have stackers go to their own mat and timer and practice whichever stacks they want to practice.
The coach circulates around giving feedback to stackers until the end of practice.
